Higher mortality in March, no excess deaths

In the last week of March (week 12, 21 to 27 March 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,600. This is slightly more than in the previous week (3,567) and approximately 400 more than expected. There were altogether around 500 more deaths than expected in March. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 65 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

The mortality figures for March cover the past four weeks, i.e. weeks 9 through 12 (28 February to 27 March 2022 inclusive). As of week 10, mortality is above the expected level, but within the range of usual fluctuations; there has not been any excess mortality. Previously, mortality was below the expected level for eight weeks in a row. On average, per week over 100 more deaths than expected were recorded in March, whereas in February the weekly number of deaths was almost 150 lower than expected.

Mortality in March up among long-term care recipients in particular

Based on the estimate, in week 12 mortality remained more or less the same as in the previous week among recipients of long-term care (Long-term Care Act, Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Mortality did show an increase among the rest of the population. There were over 1,400 deaths among long-term care recipients (200 more than expected) and 2,200 among the rest of the population (also 200 more than expected).
Over the whole month of March, there were nearly 350 more deaths than expected among long-term care recipients. Among the rest of the population, there were almost 200 more deaths than expected in March.

Elevated mortality among over-65s

Mortality continued to rise in week 12 among people aged 80 and over, to an estimated 2,100 deaths. This is approximately 250 more than expected for this period. Over the whole month of March, there were nearly 200 more deaths than expected among long-term care recipients.
Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 1,100 deaths were recorded in week 12, i.e. around 150 more than expected. There was moderate excess mortality in this age group for the second week in a row. Over the whole month of March, there were around 250 more deaths than expected among people aged 65 to 79 years.
Among people under 65, mortality was an estimated 400 in week 12, i.e. more or less as expected. This age group had approximately 50 more deaths than expected for the month of March.

COVID-19 mortality known up to December 2021 inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to December 2021 inclusive. According to these data, a total of 39,552 people died due to COVID-19 in the period March 2020 to December 2021 inclusive.

Estimate for week 12

The figures for week 12 of 2022 are estimates, based on 83 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 12 on Friday 8 April. The figures will be more complete by then.
