Mortality in week 10 roughly the same as expected

In week 10 (8 to 14 March 2021 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,300. This number is approximately the same as expected for this period and nearly 250 up on the previous week (3,075). Mortality among long-term care users increased slightly as well, although it remained below the expected level. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the provisional weekly mortality figures.

Since week 39 of 2020, weekly mortality has been higher than expected. In week 7 of 2021, the number of deaths was more or less equal to expected mortality for this period. In weeks 8 and 9, it was below the expected level. Estimated mortality for week 10 is virtually equal to the expected mortality for this period. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 136 COVID-19 deaths in week 10 (as at 16 March).

Mortality among long-term care users below expected level

Despite a small increase in week 10, mortality among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz) remained below the expected level. Mortality among the rest of the population was up as well but rose above the expected level. There were over 1,150 deaths among long-term care users, including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, approximately 2,150 deaths were recorded.

Mortality in all age groups more or less as expected

In week 10, the number of deaths in all age groups was virtually the same as the expected mortality for this period. An estimated 1,900 deaths were recorded among the population aged 80 and over; nearly 1,000 among people aged 65 to 79 and nearly 450 deaths among people under the age of 65.

COVID-19 mortality known up to November inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on daily reports on the number of deaths received by CBS. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via a death cause certificate. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including November 2020. According to these figures, slightly over 16,000 people died of COVID-19 between March and November 2020, as published by CBS on 10 March. Excess mortality during the first wave and during the first ten weeks of the second wave is entirely attributable to mortality from the novel coronavirus.

Data sources for RIVM

To date, RIVM has registered 16,118 COVID-19 deaths. These include 9,715 recorded until November 2020 inclusive (as at 16 March 2021). RIVM receives data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths from municipal health services (GGD) around the country on a daily basis. The actual COVID-19-related death count in the Netherlands is likely to turn out higher because of the following reasons: it is possible that not all people with COVID-19 have themselves tested, there is no reporting obligation for COVID-19 and registration sometimes takes a little longer.

Estimate for week 10

The figures for week 10 are estimates, based on 83 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 10 on Friday 26 March. The figures will be more complete by then.
