In week 50 (7 to 13 December inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,550. This is over 50 more than in the previous week, when there were 3,494 deaths. Mortality is always higher in winter. However, there were still 450 more deaths than would normally be expected in this period. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the provisional weekly figures on mortality.

As of week 39, weekly mortality is higher than expected. In the first twelve weeks of the second wave (weeks 39 to 50 inclusive), there were almost 5.3 thousand more deaths than would normally be expected in this period. During the first wave (weeks 11 to 19 inclusive) the estimated excess mortality stood at almost 9 thousand. With the exception of elevated mortality in weeks 33 and 34 during the heat wave, the average weekly death count has been slightly below the expected levels had there not been a coronavirus pandemic.

Mortality up again among long-term care users

Based on estimated mortality in week 50, mortality rose among people receiving care under the Long-term care Act (Wlz) such as nursing home residents than among the rest of the population. There were altogether 1,400 deaths among long-term care users in week 50. Among the rest of the population, there were over 2,150 deaths, representing a decline relative to week 49.
The number of deaths among long-term care users in the first twelve weeks of the second wave (weeks 39 to 50 inclusive) was almost 2.5 thousand higher than would be expected in this period otherwise. During the first wave (weeks 11 to 19 inclusive), the estimated excess mortality stood at almost 5.2 thousand.

Mortality up further among men

In week 50, mortality rose relatively more sharply among men than among women, compared to the previous week. There were an estimated 1,800 deaths among men against 1,700 among women.
In previous weeks during the second wave, there were also more deaths among men than among women, even though the elderly population includes more women than men. During the first wave (weeks 11 to 19 inclusive), mortality was relatively higher among men as well. Excess mortality among men was 38 percent against 29 percent among women.

COVID-19 mortality known until June

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on daily reports on the number of deaths received by CBS. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a lager stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including June 2020. According to these figures, just over 10,000 people died of COVID-19 between March and June 2020, as published by CBS on 1 October. Excess mortality over this period is therefore entirely attributable to mortality from the novel coronavirus.

Data sources for RIVM

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) receives data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths from municipal health services (GGD) around the country on a daily basis. The actual death count related to COVID-19 is likely to turn out higher because of the following reasons: possibly not all people with COVID-19 have themselves tested, there is no reporting obligation for COVID-19 and registration sometimes takes a little longer.
Up to and including June 2020, RIVM registered 6,182 COVID-19 deaths. In weeks 39 through 50, it registered 3,383 COVID-19 deaths, of which 215 in week 50 (as at 15 December 2020). There were fewer than 200 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the intervening period.

Estimate for week 50

The figures for week 50 are estimates, based on 84 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 50 on Friday 29 December. The figures will be more complete by then.

The figures for week 51 will appear later than usual on account of the Christmas holidays. They will be published on Tuesday 29 December instead of Friday 25 December.
